Mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA (MPS IVA) is a rare genetic disease caused by mutations in the GALNS gene and is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. GALNS encodes N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase that breaks down certain complex carbohydrates known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs).
